Shooting at Park stemmed from suburbs
The shooting at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on May 1 was on the top of people’s minds at the Kingfield Neighborhood Association’s annual meeting last week. MPD’s 5th Precinct Interim Inspector Ryan Kelly reported that the shooting is being investigated by the Park Police but had some details to share.

Kelly said the people involved were teenagers who came into Minneapolis from area suburbs. Kelly said police have one suspect identified and confirmed four people were shot. Kelly has no other information on their conditions.

Kelly also commented on the rash of vehicle windows being smashed. “We hold TikTok accountable,” Kelly said, describing teenagers who have turned the vandalism into a game to record and post on the popular social media app.

Annunciation community fought for House to vote on gun legislation
The Minnesota House ended its session on Sunday, May 17 without voting on a gun control package that passed the Senate on May 4. Over the final weekend, House representatives held a sit-in, the Annunciation community protested, but the package never came up for a vote.

Rep. Jamie Long (who represents Southwest), accused House Speaker Lisa Demuth of holding the package and not releasing it for a vote. Demuth wouldn’t answer Long beyond saying it “wasn’t true,” and that the package was “still being reviewed.”

A bill to bring relief to those impacted by Operation Metro Surge was also not brought to a vote at the House.

LynLake chicken swap
The seemingly cursed 27th and Lyndale location has lost another one: Tender Lovin’ Chix closed last week after an almost two-year run. It was preceded by Fire and Nice, a pizza and beer business that stuck around for three years (full transparency: I bartended there for a while).

Just down the street, VUKA Peri Peri is in its soft-opening phase at Lyndale Avenue and Lake Street (in the former Casablanca spot). They serve South African marinated chicken.

And the Haraz Coffee House slated to open in the former Iron Door Pub spot should be opening soon, according to Bring Me the News.

C. David George is dead
The notorious slumlord that citizen journalist Taylor Dahlin and Southwest Voices have been reporting on for years died on April 13, according to reporting by Dahlin.

George’s numerous apartment buildings have laid vacant for years, leading to fires (one that led to a complete demolition) and nuisance properties.

City leaders tried to work with George on selling his properties but he often told city leaders he wanted to sell his portfolio all at once.

Dahlin reports that one of George’s buildings, where he lived alone, has already seen exterior improvements since his death.
