Plan your Porchfest
Kingfield Porchfest kicks off the Southwest porchfest season on June 18 from 6-9 p.m.. Food trucks from Finer Meats and Cafe Ena will be along the route, available online. The Lynnhurst Porchfest is June 25 from 6-9 p.m. and the Uptown Porchfest is Aug. 15 from 1-6 p.m. Porchfests are free to attend and feature local artists performing on porches or in yards.
Standoff on 28th Street in Whittier
Law enforcement had an 8-hour stand off with a suspect at 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue on June 9, 2026. The Hennepin County Sheriff s Office was attempting to serve an arrest warrant to the suspect when he barricaded himself inside an apartment building. MPR News reports he was wanted for failing to maintain contact with his supervision agent.
New movie club at Lagoon Theater
The Uptown Movie Club launches June 17 with a screening of “The Baldies,” a documentary about a 1980s multiracial skinhead gang who fought Neo-Nazis in Minneapolis.
The Baldies’ favorite hangout? The Uptown McDonalds, then a popular place for punks to hang out, often called McPunks.
The club is planning to meet the third Wednesday of every month.
CITIZENS UTILITY BOARD
A utilities advocacy group has been looking out for Minnesota residents for 10 years.
Sen. Scott Dibble called the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota “one of the most thoughtful, trusted, and effective voices at the Capitol for everyday Minnesotans.” Read more about its work to protect Minnesota residents from high utility costs and energy shutoffs.
Minnehaha Dog Park decommission
The Park & Rec Board’s Planning Committee heard a resolution on June 3, 2026 to decommission the Minnehaha Off Leash Dog Park due to the land being on Indigenous sacred burial grounds. The board heard a presentation on the origins of the land on May 20.
District 4 Commissioner and Planning Committee Chair Jason Garcian brought forth the resolution. If the park is decommissioned, dogs could still be on the land, with leashes. The resolution also directs that community is involved in finding alternatives for off-leash spaces for dogs. After passing the Planning Committee unanimously, the resolution will likely be voted on at the June 17 board meeting.
MinneAPOLIS POLICE BUDGET
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara resigned in May 26, 2026. The week prior, O’Hara was unable to answer questions about the 2025 police budget during the City Council’s Committee of Whole meeting. The Minneapolis Police Department submitted a report on its 2025 budget as a response to a City Council legislative directive. The MPD was $21 million over budget in 2025. When Council Member Aisha Chughtai asked O’Hara about the department being $190,000 over budget in travel, she addressed the inequity in how the police department operates.
