PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA SHOW MAY 20
On Saturday, May 20, the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra, the United States’ first orchestra organized to represent and support the queer and allied community, closes its 30th anniversary season with the world premiere of a brand new work by trans, nonbinary composer Andrew Yee (she/they). Titled “Briefly Gorgeous,” Yee’s piece is based on the novel “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous” by Ocean Vuong, and it features sights and sounds from the novel including butterflies, storms, Vietnamese anti-war songs, and American gospel songs. The program also features music by Duke Ellington, Libby Larsen, and Augusta Holmés. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Ted Mann Concert Hall. Pay-what-you-can tickets ($1 minimum) are available at MNPhil.org.

BDE MAKA SKA BOAT LAUNCH CLOSES
The Bde Maka Ska boat launch closed on Sunday, May 14, 2023. The launch will remain closed until the pavilion reconstruction project is complete this summer. Access to the dock and tender boats will be maintained while the launch is rebuilt and site work wraps up. The project will create two new buildings, including new, all-gender accessible restrooms and ample outdoor public seating to replace the building that burned down in 2019. The site will reopen to the public this summer. The Minneapolis Sailing Center and Wheel Fun Rentals are operating at northeast Bde Maka Ska this season.

CONSTRUCTION AT BRYN MAWR MEADOWS PARK
Construction crews are back at work in Bryn Mawr Meadows Park. Barring any delays for weather, most construction is planned to be complete by the end of June. Equipment for the play area and bicycle skills park will be installed in late summer. Meanwhile, the three fields in the park’s southwest area, as well as its exterior perimeter trail and cricket practice area, will remain open for the duration of the project.

CANINE INFLUENZA
On May 5, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health alerted Minneapolis Animal Care & Control to several cases of canine influenza found in Minneapolis, particularly in the North Loop and Uptown areas. Canine influenza is a highly infectious virus spread among dogs. The virus is not believed to be a threat to humans, although it can infect cats. It is particularly concerning in areas where high concentrations of dogs gather.

BLOOD DRIVE JUNE 12
Register and attend the American Red Cross blood drive at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 4842 Nicollet Avenue South on Monday, June 12 2023, noon to 6 p.m. First, register at Redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-redcross. Many patients on medication are still able to donate. There are no upper age limits to donation. Persons age 16-18 can donate with parents permission. Some walk-in appointments may be available. Donors in June will receive a $10 gift card by email to a merchant of their choice.
